Bill Blass in Deal to Do Fur

NEW YORK — Peter Som, newly minted creative director of women’s at Bill Blass, already has another category to sink his teeth into.

Bill Blass Ltd. has inked a licensing deal with The Global Fur Group to manufacture and distribute furs under the Blass name. The Montreal-based company said it will take its cues from the firm’s ready-to-wear collection. The fur line will launch this fall at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and smaller specialty stores.

“The Global Fur Group will be a great partner for us as we continue to build on the Bill Blass image and lifestyle categories,” Robert D’Loren, president and chief executive officer of NexCen Brands Inc., which owns Bill Blass, said in a statement. “We view this collaboration with The Global Fur Group as a great step forward in the extension of the brand.”

Blass once had a fur licensee in Mohl Fur Co., but decided to terminate that license in the mid-Eighties.

The new collection features pieces such as a Loden-dyed chinchilla coat and an embroidered black broadtail coat. It retails at prices such as $9,800 for a mink charcoal car coat, $10,600 for a Loden corduroy sheared mink coat and $36,000 for a feathered Russian sable coat.

The Global Fur Group consists of divisions including Natural Furs International, Global Furs Inc. and Interco, and is the North American licensee for Féraud.

“With our innovative design team and understanding of the Blass vision, we are confident in the success of this relationship,” said Christina Nacos, vice president of The Global Fur Group, in the statement.
