LOS ANGELES — A fire raged for almost two hours early Thursday in a building in the Garment District, clogging a major street leading to apparel showrooms just a day before the contemporary fashion market is scheduled to start here.
More than 240 firefighters battled the blaze at 1034 South Los Angeles Street, which erupted at about 4:50 a.m. and was brought under control at 6:42 a.m., authorities said.
The two-floor, 30,000-square-foot building that caught fire housed 10 small businesses on the first floor and warehouse storage on the second floor. The enterprises ranged from a bridal shop and shoe retailer to a bedding store.
No injuries were reported.
The fire damaged three businesses, said D'Lisa Davies, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles City Fire Department. An investigation was under way to determine the cause of the blaze and the financial loss. The Los Angeles Times reported that the fire started in the rear of a wholesale comforter and fabric store.
The fire was contained to the building where it originated, Davies said. However, Los Angeles Street, between Olympic Boulevard and 11th Street, was closed.
Cooper Design Space, California Market Center, New Mart and Gerry Building — the homes of the city's apparel showrooms — are all clustered at the corner of South Los Angeles Street and Ninth Street, about one-fifth of a mile north of the fire.
Representatives for CMC, New Mart and Cooper Design Space reported minimal to no disruptions in getting to those sites. Hours at the showrooms were not altered.
