LONDON — Burberry cut the ribbon on its first flagship in Spain this week, kicking off a season of store-openings on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Barcelona flagship, which had a soft opening on Wednesday, spans 20,520 square feet over two floors and carries the full range of Burberry men’s, women’s and accessories collections.
As reported, Spain is Burberry’s second-largest market after Japan, and the Barcelona opening signals a major step in Burberry’s worldwide expansion. "Spain is a very important market for Burberry," said Burberry chief executive Rose Marie Bravo. "This excellent location gives us the opportunity to establish a flagship presence there."
Located on the corner of Paseo de Gracia and Aragon, the flagship was designed by the London-based architects Mark Pinney Associates, while the interiors were created by Randall A. Ridless LCC in New York together with Burberry’s in-store visual- and store-planning team. The team also designed Burberry’s flagship in London.
The company took pains to blend the Burberry style with local architecture. The tiled floor of the new store is inspired by the works of 20th-century Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi, and the curving staircase was the one originally found in the period building.
In addition, Burberry commissioned an oak table from the English furniture designer and cabinet maker David Linley. The tabletop is inlaid with another Gaudi-inspired design by means of the 17th-century decorative technique marquetry.
In other respects, the store resembles Burberry’s New Bond Street flagship with its use of blond English oak, limestone, leather, walnut and sycamore. There are Thirties- and Forties-style chairs in leather, corduroy and suede, and, of course, a white wooly lamb figure near the entrance.
Burberry declined to give first-year projections for the unit or say how much it invested in the Spanish store.
Meanwhile, in October, Burberry will open its third London unit — on Brompton Road in Knightsbridge in the former Scotch House store. The 10,000-square-foot store will have a two-floor glass facade facing the street, and will carry the Burberry Prorsum and Burberry London collections and accessories. It will also offer a made-to-measure trenchcoat service and tailoring service.Later that month, Burberry will open its newly expanded and refurbished store on 57th Street in Manhattan. The 30,000-square-foot store will cover six floors and carry the Prorsum, London and accessories collections.

BREAKING: Jonathan Saunders is leaving @DVF. The designer has resigned from his position as chief creative officer of Diane von Furstenberg, the company said in a statement on Friday. At the time of his hire, von Furstenberg said Saunders’ arrival symbolized and facilitated her stepping back from the day-to-day duties that occupy the work of a full-time creative director. The British designer joined DVF in May 2016 and was in charge of all product categories. #wwdnews

Four-time Oscar-nominated actress Annette Bening has been waiting 20 years to play Gloria Graham in "Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool," which will be released on December 29. The movie about Graham – a Hollywood star known for her controversial relationship with a younger Englishman named Peter Turner – is based off a memoir Turned wrote. London’s newly opened @designmuseum will look back on the life and work of Azzedine Alaïa in a show that the designer helped to curate before he died of heart failure last month. The retrospective, which Alaïa had worked on with Mark Wilson, chief curator of the @groningermuseum, will look at the impact of his work worldwide.
