MILAN -- Carla Fendi has been named chairman of the Fendi group, succeeding her sister Paola Fendi, in what the company called a rotation of management among the five Fendi sisters.
Carla Fendi, who championed Fendi's expansion in the U.S., more recently has been handling marketing and communications, in addition to other responsibilities.
Paola Fendi will remain on the board and continue to oversee the development of the fur lines. The other Fendi sisters -- Anna, Franca and Alda -- are also directors.
Fendi has also appointed an outside executive, Enzo Zanderigo Iona, as general manager of the group. Although Fendi has brought in specialized managers from outside before, this is the first time one has been given such high-level responsibility.
Iona has a business degree from Milan's Catholic University and has worked for such Italian industrial groups as Montedison and Snamprogetti as well as Peat Marwick Consultants. Most recently he was general manager at Database, an Italian information processing firm.
In still another move, the Rome-based company has opened up management of the group to the third generation of Fendis. Guido Formilli, 37-year-old son of Franca Fendi and Luigi Formilli, has been appointed to the board of Fendi SpA, along with Maria Teresa Venturini, 33, daughter of Anna Fendi and Giulio Venturini. Maria Silvia Venturini, 31 -- sister of Maria Teresa -- and cousins Andrea Formilli, 32, son of Franca Fendi and Luigi Formilli, and Alessia Caruso, 25, daughter of Alda Fendi and Ignazio Caruso, have been appointed to the boards of Fendi's two leather producing companies in Florence, Cinque Piu and Feeling.
