NEW YORK — Satinine has choreographed a pas de deux between fragrance and dance.
The Milan-based manufacturer of Ferrari and Luciano Soprani fragrances had previously signed a licensing deal with legendary prima ballerina Carla Fracci, and introduced a women’s scent under her name in Italy last year. Now the brand is headed for the U.S.
Satinine’s American distributor, Cary Lopez of the New York-based Karis Group, says she is in talks with Nordstrom about the possibility of a fall launch and has also initiated discussions with Saks Fifth Avenue.
The fragrance is a fruity oriental floral, featuring notes of passion fruit, tuberose, ylang ylang, freesia, jasmine and lily, as well as musk, hawthorn, sandalwood and vanilla.
The six-item line includes a 30-ml. and 50-ml. eau de parfum spray for $65 and $85, respectively; a $40 shower gel; a $45 body lotion; a $55 body cream, and a $20 soap.
Lopez plans on marketing the line on a tightly targeted basis, indicating that she probably will choose one specialty store for the fall launch, then move into another chain in the spring, possibly along with Federated Department Stores. But this is limited, specialty store distribution, she emphasized. While she wouldn’t comment on sales projections, industry sources estimate that the Fracci scent could ultimately do $2.5 million at retail.
Lopez talked about the ballerina marking promotional appearances, particularly with gala events benefiting the American Ballet Theater.
Lopez, who previously was involved with another distributor, Europarfum, until 1999, heads her present firm with partner Kristine Spurney. The pair represent four Italian houses. Lopez listed the other clients as Etro, Borsari and the Venice-based Mavive, as well as Satinine. Lopez said she is thinking about launching Ferrari’s new men’s scent, Racing, next year.
