NEW YORK — The Council of Fashion Designers of America is planning to stage its annual CFDA Fashion Awards event on June 2 for the second consecutive year at the New York Public Library.

Following mixed reviews over the scaled-back awards ceremony in 2002, Peter Arnold, executive director of the CFDA, said the organization is working to improve its efficiency this year to tighten the length of the event and has hired KCD to produce the evening.

Like last year’s event, the awards ceremony will kick off with a reception in Astor Hall, followed by a seated dinner. But instead of presenting the awards during dinner, guests will move to a separate location within the library to watch the award presentations following the meal. Robert Isabell will design the space and Douglas Lloyd of Lloyd + Co. will art direct its graphic presentation and journal.

As reported, Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera and Vera Wang will serve as co-chairs for the event, which is being underwritten for a second year by Swarovski.

This year, the 450 designers, journalists, retailers and stylists who participate in the awards nomination process will also be able to cast their ballots, due by March 28, through Style.com, which has signed on as the official Web site of the event, Arnold said. Once the finalists for designers of the year and two Perry Ellis awards — one for ready-to-wear and one for accessories — are set, that group will vote again for the winners, who will be announced at the ceremony.
