PARIS — Apologies by Chanel have ended the threat of a Muslim boycott of the fashion house.

As reported, the appearance in the Chanel couture show last week of three dresses carrying verses from the Koran caused an uproar, and a group of Muslim clerics in Indonesia called for the boycott.

Chanel reacted quickly, burning the dresses before an Imam — a Muslim prayer leader — and making apologies. It also urged photographers having photos of the dresses to return the negatives or destroy them.

On Thursday, a spokeswoman for the Indonesian Embassy here said that the boycott demanded by the Muslim clerics has been called off.
