Consumers will be seeing red come spring, literally. The shade has surpassed blue to become the favorite for spring 2003. Experts say red’s popularity transcends geographic borders and all cultures relate to it. Tibetan red, the top red in fall 2002, is more exotic than this pure red designers favor for spring.

INSIGNIA BLUE 9.09%

In the fashion color race, red, white and blue have always traded the top three slots. Blue is considered familiar and dependable and is the most popular color among consumers. Designers, who bet heavily on graphite blue for fall, are getting behind this more straightforward and patriotic shade for next season.

ANTIQUE WHITE 8.73%

Pure as driven snow, but spring’s interest in antique white has been spurred in part by the Japanese philosophy, Wabi Sabi, which respects anything with the patina of age. This is Ralph Lauren territory. Think off-white blouses, faded jeans and vintage jewelry at home on the range.

EBONY 5.89%

Black took a back seat to color during the late Nineties, but when the economy started its downward spiral it came back strong. Given the woes of the stock market lately, does a black fall 2003 lie ahead? Neutralist Calvin Klein continues to be a black booster.

Think your favorite Schwinn. Biking red is slightly deeper than true red and the appearance of two reds in the top five indicates designers are paying more attention to the color than ever. Traditionally, blues have occupied more top spots.

Consciously or subconsciously, designers are showing their concern for the environment by ordering this green found in nature. According to experts, it’s also one of the most wearable shades in the color spectrum.

If it’s neither black nor white, it must be gray. The shade’s popularity ebbs and flows from year to year, although it has always held a slot among the top 20. Smoked pearl will turn up in luxury fibers such as cashmere for spring.

It’s a tough color to wear, but its upbeat message represents optimism and enlightenment — just like sunshine. And since spring represents the awakening from winter gray, designers are using more of it.

Constancy and dependability are sought after more than ever in these times, which is where placid blue comes in, along with its cousins dream blue and chicory. Experts say the popularity of blue is a growing worldwide phenomenon.

Another blue, but even more peaceful. This shade was inspired by the trend in turquoise jewelry, and underwater rocks and stones.

Is it blue or part of the green trend? With slightly more of a green cast than the above blue shades, chicory could be the color of an organically grown vegetable — and we know how much some designers love those.

Envisage sitting before a roaring fire with a large glass of great claret and you have this red. Winetasting is more sophisticated and luxurious and darker than true red or biking red.

After the serious hibernation colors of fall — dark earth, graphite blue, castor gray and cocoon — designers are responding to their inner child with prism pink. Incidentally, pink is the most flattering hue for women, regardless of complexion. Why else do you think we always say pretty in pink?

The appearance of true navy on the list further supports the blues theory. The color, like all those other blues, is seen as an anchor in a sea of unpredictability. Perfect for today.

Another flower gives its color for spring. Designers are using bachelor button as an accent shade or for sportswear. A fun twist on turquoise and blue-green, it will be popular for polo shirts and jewelry.

Garnet is another variation of red that’s almost a combination of the other two, but with a warmer cast. If blue is dependable and reliable, red is an emotional color that’s hard to ignore.

Yet another New Age color for the third spring of the new millennium. Incense is a darker and dressier version of the workaday khaki, with an ethereal quality that supports its name. It’s a touchstone for designers old enough to remember lava lamps and shag rugs.

No, it isn’t the name of an all-girl rock band. This gray shade has a more luxurious feel and softness than its cousin, smoked pearl. It’s a tone that whispers rather than shrieks, an indication that the eye-blasting greens and oranges of the recent past are played out.
