At Lord & Taylor Tuesday morning, just a few blocks away from the action at the Bryant Park tents, WWD asked customers perusing the store’s sportswear department whether they knew Fashion Week was taking place and their thoughts on apparel.
Here’s what two of them said:
Age: Around 50
Home: Centerport, N.Y.
Job: Marketing and advertising for the financial business.
Aware of Fashion Week: "Yes, I think it’s fantastic for New York City because it’s the fashion capital of the world. It’s exciting to see the tents and I am interested in seeing what the new fashions are."
Favorite designers: "I like Liz Claiborne, Tahari and Jones. I love St. John, but I can’t wear it. And I like Eileen Fisher, but I tend to stay in the lower end of the spectrum."
Style inspiration: "My daughter. In fact, she would kill me if she knew I was shopping without her right now. She lives for fashion."
Thoughts on Lord & Taylor’s sportswear assortment: "Today I don’t like the presentation, but I love this store. Everything is hodgepodged together. There’s a lot of sales right now, but a lot of it is junk. And I’m planning a ski trip right now, so I’m not really interested in spring and summer. It’s just too far ahead. I’ll look, though."

Aware of Fashion Week: "No, I didn’t know it was Fashion Week. I’m not really into it. I’m pretty much just a Ralph Lauren customer. In fact, everything I have on, except my sneakers (Reebok), is Ralph — even my socks. I’m a walking advertisement for him." (She was wearing the designer’s licensed brand Lauren as well as Polo.)
Thoughts on fashion: "I just like Ralph Lauren for the style, fit, quality and price."So you’d want to go to Ralph’s show? "He has a fashion show? I guess so. I would attend any fashion show."
