Nancy Davis pulled off another star-studded, casualty-free weekend of skiing in Aspen, with no help from the weather. Sure, there was good powder locally for the second annual Race to Erase MS -- the problem was there was good powder almost everywhere else. Almost all the flights from New York were canceled, although billionaire David Koch's plane did manage to get out. Others had to bus it from Denver. In the end, 27 teams of celebrities and pros hit the slopes on Saturday after a night of partying at the Hotel Jerome.
"I just learned to ski in December, so now I can take advantage of all those ski invitations I used to throw away," said Pierce Brosnan. Of being invited to Davis's Aspen annual, he mused, "I was always into being a serious actor. Now I guess I'm a celebrity."
"This is my first time in Aspen," said Marlee Matlin. "They volunteered me to race. I didn't volunteer myself." Although Matlin did her best on the racecourse, model Beverly Johnson had some trouble.
"They took me to the top of the mountain and by the time I got down to the racecourse, I was petrified," said Johnson. "I basically chickened out of the race."
Gloria Estefan didn't race either, but that was because of her fused spine. And Kim Alexis bowed out because she's seven months pregnant.
After the races, the group headed to the Ritz Carlton for a gala dinner and auction.
Paul Marciano's offer to feature someone's child in a Guess? ad went for $27,000 after a bidding war -- so he kicked in another ad, which went to the losing bidder for $20,000. Other hot items included a date with Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Stacey Williams, a date with Fabio, a dinner party for 50 catered by Wolfgang Puck, and a shoot with Karl Lagerfeld as photographer in Paris or New York
"Excuse me," warned emcee Dennis Miller, "but Lagerfeld does not shoot color."
