NEW YORK — When Badgley Mischka set out to make some caftans for its resort collection, it had no way of knowing the reaction would be so enthusiastic from celebrities and socialites.

So far, the Badgley Mischka caftan crew includes Elizabeth Taylor, singer Diana Krall, Tony Award-winning actress Heather Headley, Judy Taubman, Audrey Gruss and Queen Noor of Jordan, who owns about a dozen. To boot, Julia Roberts was photographed wearing one for an upcoming December issue of a top style magazine.

While strolling through a market in Bombay, Mark Badgley and James Mischka stumbled upon some vintage saris and decided to rework the fabric into the simply cut, elegant styles. There are currently two versions — one long and one short — but all are intricately bejeweled and embroidered around the neck and sleeves in India with patterns designed by the design duo. While not all use vintage fabrics, each caftan is one-of-a-kind and retails for about $2,990.

They are currently available at Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue, but the company is planning to continue developing the concept and is in the process of adding more styles.

“It will definitely be ongoing,” said Badgley. “Our customer base is so used to big, lavish evenings, but at home she likes something that’s special but a little more relaxed. Whether it’s in the Hamptons, Palm Beach or Los Angeles, there are women that entertain beautifully at home in a more relaxed, elegant way and a caftan just lends itself to that.”
