NEW YORK — There’s nothing like controlling one’s own destiny — just ask Dan Hurwitz.

The president of Rogers Department Store, a fixture in Grand Rapids, Mich., retailing for the past 47 years, is the lead investor in a new upscale development slated to open in September. Called Terrazzo, the 54,000-square-foot center will be home to Daniels, a new men’s and women’s designer apparel store, owned and operated by Hurwitz.
“We wanted to control who our neighbors would be,” Hurwitz said.
Daniels will be more upscale than Rogers and its women’s wear will include special occasion, career, sportswear, activewear, outerwear, accessories and cosmetics. Its women’s brands will include Armani Collezioni, Bobby Jones, Burberry, Judith Jack, Kay Unger, Laura Mercier cosmetics, Molton Brown London cosmetics, Linda Lundstrom, Rene Lezard, Strenesse, Swarovski, Versace Cosmetics, Vestimenta, Carmen Marc Valvo and Barbour.
The store will total 15,000 square feet and will serve as the apparel anchor for the center, which will feature 12 other retailers including a gourmet grocery, an upscale restaurant, a jeweler, a home furnishings store and others.
“Right now, it’s 50 percent leased,” Hurwitz said, noting that he’s turned down more retailers than he’s signed. “We don’t want to just fill it with a Subway and some hair salons.”
It will feature European-style design, and a brick and limestone facade with pedestrian-friendly canopies. It will offer valet parking, heated sidewalks in the winter and a landscaped public terrace.
“The Grand Rapids community is evolving and becoming more cosmopolitan,” Hurwitz said. “People have less time today to simply browse and discover. Terrazzo will be a single destination where they can find everything they need.”
Grand Rapids and surrounding communities boast more than one million residents with an average household income of more than $65,000. There are 47,000 people within a three-mile radius of Terrazzo with an average income of $113,000.
Founded in 1955 by Hurwitz’s grandparents, Hy and Greta Berkowitz, Rogers has grown to 100,000 square feet on three floors and has annual sales of around $28 million. The recent opening of a regional mall in the area has hurt volume at the store and, according to Hurwitz, was one of the primary reasons he sought to develop Daniels.
