In a season when many designers focused on the most basic and salable building blocks of a wardrobe, Raf Simons at Jil Sander served up staples that were daringly innovative with sculptural, rounded shapes. The voluminous curvature through the torso and the shoulders evoked armor, off-setting the feminine effect of an hourglass shape. Tops included bulbous, sweatshirtlike pullovers and thick, ribbed sweaters with dropped shoulders and curving sleeves. Employing a bonded and reinforced velvet, Simons broadcast his unmistakable molded shapes with a futuristic gleam.
