Juno star Ellen Page and songstresses Joss Stone and Ashanti may have been the young blood in this year’s Heart Truth Red Dress show, but it was Liza Minnelli who proved she can hold her own. The celebrity-studded affair looked more like a dance-off than a true fashion show with some models, like Lisa Rinna and Rita Moreno, shaking everything they had. Initially, it looked like Minnelli’s turn on the catwalk—clad in a red Halston Original top and black velvet red-trimmed bell-bottoms—would be tame in comparison…until someone handed her a mic.
Belting out “New York, New York,” the singer proved she was still in touch with the exuberant gal who had once danced the night away with Halston at Studio 54. The Friday-morning crowd was at first taken aback by her no-business-like-show-business attitude, but soon joined in, singing along with the refrain. Even guest of honor Laura Bush, in the front row with her fashion-conscious daughter, Barbara, seemed delighted by the impromptu performance. And by the time little red dress confetti fell through the air and models were back on the runway for their final bow, Minnelli was already soaking up her standing ovation.
