PARIS — When Marlies Dekkers alighted in Paris, the feathers were flying.

The Dutch lingerie designer, scouting her first store location here, recently put on a wild, birds-of-paradise-themed show at Paris nightclub Nouveau Casino.

Models paraded designs from Dekkers' Undressed and Nightdressed collections against moving images of a dove winging its way, slow-motion, through the skies. Looks ranged from rococo and Toile de Jouy motifs to rock climbing-inspired sets, complete with copper safety hooks. All came rigged with Dekker's signature crisscross straps. But it was Dekkers' own getup for her finale, falling somewhere between Cindi Lauper and a geisha, that stole the show.

"I want to wake other designers up to the idea that lingerie should be approached like ready-to-wear," Dekkers said. "We need to push the boundaries of lingerie design."

For instance, the designer wants to pay more attention to the flip side of the female form.

"Typical lingerie focuses on the breasts or the belly, but that's more to please men," she said. "I want to bring the focus to other body areas like the shoulders, or the small of the back. I want to spread the message that, ultimately, lingerie is a woman's world."
