Pop’s reigning young newlyweds, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, turned out to host the opening of Levi’s Santa Monica, Calif., store early this month. Simpson spent her 23rd birthday talking about her love of the 150-year-old brand.

“I still have my favorite pair from seventh grade,” she said. “They’ve totally been washed over 20-umpteen times, but I ended up cutting them off as shorts, so now I end up wearing them all summer.”

Lachey, who described Levi’s as “comfortwear,” remembered: “My first pair were way too tight. My mom had to put one of those cheesy patches over the knee.”

As the 150 guests, including Danny Masterson, Jessica’s little sister, “8th Heaven” actress Ashlee Simpson, Kelly Hu and January Jones, sipped margaritas and grooved to the music, there was plenty of chat about denim.

Hu wanted “stuff that stretches because they’re comfortable, and they make you look really thin,” while Simpson admitted, “I’m a butt girl, so I love the way a jean fits your butt.”

In addition to the walls of jeans draped over wooden pegs, the 3,000-square-foot store featured vintage T-shirts; skirts; jackets divided into women’s and men’s sections, and a unisex section stocked with 501s.
