“Diane Von Furstenberg is a perennially modern designer who is as current today as when she first burst onto the fashion scene in the 1970s,” said Bill Winsor, president and chief executive officer of the market center, which hosts the Dallas Fashion Awards awards each year. “Her intelligent designs are attracting a whole new generation of customers. And in many ways her clothes reflect the spirit of the modern woman, combining pure femininity with complex urban sophistication. This award honors her passion for innovative design and her excellence of vision.”
In a phone interview, Von Furstenberg commented, “It is always nice to get awards, isn’t it? It’s always nice to be celebrated.”
The Fashion Excellence winner traditionally presents a runway show at the Dallas Fashion Awards, and Von Furstenberg said she may show a preview of her spring collection in addition to fall styles. The formal Oct. 25 ceremony at the International Apparel Mart will also feature the announcements of DFA winners in 15 women’s, men’s and children’s categories.
“We’re not quite sure yet whether we’ll show spring,” Von Furstenberg said, “but we’ll make it exciting. Right now we have to make spring.”
Von Furstenberg is having a productive year for her namesake label, which rose to fame in the mid-Seventies for selling an astonishing 5 million printed jersey wrap dresses.
This year Von Furstenberg has opened a store in Miami and introduced sunglasses licensed to MODO and tennis togs licensed to Reebok with input from Venus Williams. She’s currently working on a deal to introduce fine jewelry under her name, but details have not been finalized.
The hectic pace will continue this September when Von Furstenberg opens a shop in London and launches a beauty line with licensee Inter Parfums Inc.
“We have stores in New York and Miami, and we’re looking at other sites from Vegas to L.A. to Paris,” Von Furstenberg said.
The beauty line will be unveiled at Henri Bendel and rolled out to 35 doors of Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. Von Furstenberg plans to make the most of her time in Texas by making personal appearances at Saks stores in Austin, Houston and San Antonio to promote the cosmetics before the awards ceremony.
