NEW YORK -- The Christian Dior boutique closed Monday after a taxi crashed through one of its two Fifth Avenue windows.
Despite estimated damages in the $2 million to $3 million range, a spokeswoman said a two-day trunk show of the Dior spring ready-to-wear collection will be staged today and Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The designer shop is at 703 Fifth Ave., on the corner of East 55th Street.
The spokeswoman said a taxi collided with another car while rounding the corner on East 55th Street around 7 a.m. A pipe burst from the impact of the broken glass and flooded the basement. As a result, there was a lot of damage to inventory stored there, primarily accessories and some apparel.
Some $3,000 worth of accessories, cosmetics, and a three-piece silk ensemble in the window display were destroyed, the spokeswoman said. Cosmetics and accessories counters ensconced behind the southeast window also suffered damage. "There were no injuries, because it was early and it was a holiday," the spokeswoman said, noting that the foundations of the building are badly fractured.
She added, "The nose of the taxi was in the store, and the display and bullet-proof window were totally destroyed."
