“Dream Concert” Fundraiser to Benefit MLK Jr. Memorial

Tommy Hilfiger, Russell Simmons, Quincy Jones, Joel Horowitz, David Stern and Edgar Bronfman Jr. will spearhead a concert on Sept. 18 to benefit the building of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial.

Tommy Hilfiger, Russell Simmons, Quincy Jones, Joel Horowitz, David Stern and Edgar Bronfman Jr. will spearhead a concert on Sept. 18 to benefit the building of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The Dream Concert is expected to be a gathering of all-star musicians, although the roster has yet to be finalized. Grammy Award-winning songwriters and record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis will serve as artistic directors, while Muhammad Ali, Angela Bassett, Jamie Foxx, Whoopi Goldberg, Cuba Gooding Jr., Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kerry Washington and former New York Mayor David Dinkins are on the host committee. The Dream Concert will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

The Memorial Foundation has already raised $79 million of the $100 million needed to complete and maintain the memorial, and the event will help secure the additional funds. Last November, President George W. Bush, former president Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Sen. Barack Obama, and Rev. Jesse Jackson participated in the ceremonial groundbreaking of the memorial.

King’s Memorial, situated adjacent to the F.D.R. Memorial and in a direct line between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, is scheduled to be completed in 2008.
