Fifty-five — yes, that’s right: 55 — outfits in gold.

That was the relentless message Beirut designer Elie Saab delivered in a collection he called an homage to the vitality of his war-torn country of Lebanon.

It was a nice idea, but the realization — one shiny disco-style dress after another — felt heavy-handed.

That’s not to say Saab didn’t deliver his fair share of fine glitzy, embellished pieces, from dangerously short dresses embroidered with gold sequins to long, flowing numbers in gold lamé — sure to appeal to a woman who likes to look obviously sexy.
