NEW YORK -- Designer Eva Chun closed her four-year-old company Friday and will probably not ship her spring line.
"This was a decision I made rather quickly in the last few days," Chun said Friday. "I need to take some time off and concentrate on my personal life. I was doing everything myself, from design and production to sales, and it's been very stressful."
Chun admitted that business has been tough, but said the decision to close the company, which had a showroom and sewing space at 550 Seventh Ave., was based on personal reasons. She explained that her husband, Michael Chow, who owns a chain of restaurants, is based in Los Angeles, and that she has been traveling cross-country on a regular basis since they were married two years ago.
Chun said resort merchandise has already been delivered to stores, but she wasn't sure whether any spring orders will be produced.
"It was really a case of having no personal life and no time to start a family," Chun said. "I need to take a break for some time, but I'll come back into the business someday."
Chun started her own firm in Los Angeles about four years ago, specializing in evening dress separates and had announced the opening of a secondary dress division for spring.
In 1992, Chun moved her business to New York, saying she needed to be here to better establish herself. She's been carried in such stores as Bergdorf Goodman and the Macy's East division of R.H. Macy & Co.

"It's really hard sometimes. I think I have a reputation for being really tough and aggressive and pushy but I really am a very shy person who wants to be liked, and that's the conflict constantly. There's something that takes hold - I want people to like me, I don't want to be mean - but if I see something that just cries out to be answered, I go for it," says renowned NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell.
