The apparel and accessories store is now live on the home page at Amazon.com, highlighted by a bright red jacket-shaped tab. It also can be reached directly at amazon.com/apparel.

The 41,752 articles of apparel, accessories and footwear purchased at Amazon’s new shop last week included 14,487 shirts, 9,408 pants, 3,287 pairs of underwear, 3,254 pairs of shoes, 2,805 accessories, 2,712 sweaters, 1,843 jackets, 1,461 sleepwear items, 485 skirts and 140 swimsuits.

The hottest items included Kate Spade handbags; Old Navy famous flag T-shirts; Lands’ End all-weather mocs and OshKosh B’Gosh children’s overalls, said Eugene Wei, Amazon’s general manager of apparel.

Among other brands bought last week at Amazon’s fashion store were Polo Ralph Lauren button-down shirts, DKNY blouses, Polartec windbreakers, Eddie Bauer V-neck sweaters, Liz Claiborne cardigans, Tommy Bahama and Speedo swimsuits, Gap khakis, Guess jeans, Nordstrom suede skirts, Spiegel leather skirts, Marshall Field’s satin robes, Nine West boots, Nike Air Max athletic shoes, Cole Haan cashmere-blend socks, Jockey briefs and Hugo Boss boxers.

The apparel and accessories assortment now comprises several hundred thousand items and will continue to grow through 2003, according to Wei, a five-year veteran of Amazon, who previously managed the Seattle-based site’s DVD and movie categories.
