Feb. 13: Nicolas Ghesquière brought Balenciaga to New York, and started a trend with his shag-rug sweater.
Feb. 27: Pop stars Gwen Stefani and Alicia Keys hit a fashion high note when they showed up at the Grammys in John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, respectively.
Mar. 5: Chelsea Clinton showed up everywhere with her boyfriend Ian Klause. At Donatella Versace’s postshow party, the former first daughter dirty-danced the night away with him.
Mar. 6: Meet Mombasa. No self-respecting fashionista stepped out without Tom Ford’s YSL horn-handled leather hobo bag on her shoulder. It sold out in one day in Paris and London.
Mar. 24: Gwyneth goes goth. And not a lot of people liked it when fashion’s Golden Girl showed up at the Oscars in a dark, dramatic Alexander McQueen look.
Mar. 23: Oh, l’amour. Emilia Fanjul and Brian Pfeifler exchanged “I dos” in front of 500 guests at the Fanjul’s Casa de Campo compound in the Dominican Republic.
May 20: For her swan song “Living Proof” tour, Cher called old ally Bob Mackie. The partners in glitzy crime put together an over-the-top wardrobe of her famous classic looks and newer versions.
May 20: It was a duel in the sun as Sharon Stone and Milla Jovovich battled it out for paparazzi princess at Cannes. Both swooned, twirled and winked the week away.
June 3: Winona Ryder hoped the ladylike frocks of Marc Jacobs would help her look innocent at courtroom appearances for her shoplifting charges. (It didn’t work.)
June 19: Frigid winds and rain didn’t stop Marjorie Gubelmann’s Southamptonluau. Among the revelers, were, from left, Alex Kramer, Lulu de Kwiatkowski and Rachel Peters.
July 9: Karl Lagerfeld delivered a couture de force with his breathtaking fall collection at Chanel.
July 9: Oscar de la Renta took his final bow on the Balmain couture runway, applauded, of course, by his ever-loyal Ladies, including Lee Radziwill, Infanta Elena of Spain and Olympia de Rothschild, to name a few.
July 17: Ever the minimalist, Miuccia Prada unveiled a sleek, spare Miu Miu boutique on Madison Avenue.
July 31: Alexander McQueen’s modular, space-age boutique landed in New York’s Meatpacking District.
Aug. 3-10: Paris, Milan, New York…Delhi. India packed its seven-day fashion week with 53 shows and all the color and bitchiness expected from the major cities.
Aug. 10: Betsey Johnson celebrated her 60th year in typical style, with a huge girly romp fashion show-cum-birthday bash at her house in East Hampton.
Aug. 28: Seventeen-year-old Avril Lavigne broke through, bringing her angst-y rock and punk-styled studs and ties to teens everywhere.
Sept. 1: Where there was hype, there was J.Lo. This time, she launched her much-talked-about fragrance, Glow.
Sept. 14: Gwen Stefani finally tied the knot with Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale. She floated down the aisle in a pink and white corseted gown from Christian Dior by John Galliano, who attended the ceremony.
Sept. 22: Daytime’s divas dropped the sobriety of the previous year and showed up at the Emmy’s in glorious color. But Kelly Osbourne’s punk aesthetic, aided by Zandra Rhodes, stole the show.
Oct. 1: It was a fashion mega-moment — Britney Spears showed up at the Versace show in Donatella Versace’s rainbow dazzler.
Oct. 1: Barbie wasn’t the only doll little girls reached for. The Emme Doll debuted, fashioned after plus-sized model Emme and fitted with pleather jackets and sequined tops.
Oct. 7: Tom Ford opened the doors of his Gucci store (left) in Manhattan. And despite the economy, other houses did, too, including Burberry and Victoria’s Secret.
Oct. 9: Talk about teamwork. Yohji Yamamoto debuted his sporty Y-3 collection, expanding his partnership with Adidas.
Nov. 8:Giorgio Armani, looking to conquer the Far East, opened his second-largest store in the world in Hong Kong.
Nov. 14: Everybody wanted in on Victoria’s Secret’s fashion show extravaganza — even the PETA people, who dropped by to tell Gisele Bündchen what they thought of her new assignment — modeling Blackglama furs.
Nov. 18: Madonna made her proper curtsies to Queen Elizabeth II at the London premiere of “Die Another Day,” while Bond Girl Halle Berry (right) wowed in Oscar de la Renta.
