BAD BLOOD: LVMH’s Bernard Arnault and Gucci’s Domenico De Sole have traded barbs in the past. And it looks as if the luxury rivals will continue to do so for some time to come. In a recent interview in London’s Financial Times, De Sole took a dig at Arnault by saying LVMH’s Fendi business “is slowly going nowhere” and that Christian Dior is “barely breaking even.” Asked after the Dior show Wednesday what he thought of De Sole’s comments, Arnault huffed, “I’m not going to answer something that one of Mr. Pinault’s employees said.” François Pinault, the French tycoon, owns Italy’s Gucci Group. Meanwhile, actress Isabelle Huppert, on the sidelines of the Dior show, said she’s enjoyed a short respite between film gigs. “It feels good doing nothing,” she said. “I’m going to begin a feature later this year with a young director, Christophe Honore. But the project’s a secret for the moment.”



LEG ROOM: What was Hubert de Givenchy doing in the second row at the Akris show? Stretching his long, long legs out into the aisle, of course. “I didn’t want to trip the models,” the towering designer quipped, after asking to be moved from his front-row seat because of a trick knee. Givenchy rarely goes to fashion shows — his last one was Yves Saint Laurent’s swan song last year. But he’s an old friend of the Kriemler family, owners of Akris, which used to manufacture Givenchy’s ready-to-wear when he was still at the helm. Not that de Givenchy is entirely out of the fashion business. He’s been hard at work on the fledgling Cristobal Balenciaga Foundation and museum — and is gearing up for its first exhibition next summer: a display of more than 50 famous Balenciaga wedding dresses in Toledo. That’s Spain, not Ohio.



SPIRITED AWAY: Delphine Arnault, attending her first fashion show since being named to the board of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton earlier this week, sat in the front row at Christian Dior Wednesday and mused about her new responsibilities. While she’s worked at Dior for years, and sits on the board of Loewe, she’s a neophyte when it comes to champagne and cognac, a crucial part of her father Bernard’s luxury empire. “I really don’t know too much about wines and spirits,” said the statuesque 28-year-old. “I have a lot to learn.” Not that she doesn’t know a few essentials. “It’s a very profitable business,” she said with a knowing smile.

STILL LIFE: Fashion designers showed up in force Tuesday night to tour the Viktor & Rolf exhibition at the Museum of Fashion and Textiles. “I’ve loved their work since the beginning,” said Christian Lacroix as he admired their crystal-studded Russian doll collection rotating on turntables. New York fashion stars Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler also came to pay their respects. “We’re huge fans,” Hernandez gushed. The hot duo said they’re in Paris to see museums and attend fashion parties, but they’re avoiding the runway shows, lest they ignite rumors that they’re headed to a European house. Meanwhile, throngs of guests vied to congratulate Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren and meet their sometimes muse, actress Tilda Swinton. Others opted to pose for photos with the two wax figures of the designers placed at the exhibition’s entrance. Snoeren said he and Horsting had to be encased in plaster. “It was really scary,” Snoeren said. And what will become of the statues after the exhibition? Snoeren, who has made it clear their conceptual approach doesn’t preclude being commercial, declared: “We’ll sell them.”



HAIR APPARENT: This European season, there are more famous models sitting in the front row than on the catwalk. And there was no missing Peggy Moffitt front-row at Junya Watanabe’s show on Wednesday — dressed in graphic red knits that she co-designed with Rei Kawakubo. In town for a dinner being given in her honor Friday by Kawakubo, Moffitt said it was her first Paris fashion show ever and she dubbed Watanabe’s collection pretty and light. And didn’t she catch a whiff of her own signature black bob in the distended hairstyles on the runway? “If I really had a migraine my hair might look like that,” she quipped.



PACHYDERM PASSION: Keira Knightley isn’t the only pretty face to star in the latest Asprey campaign, which breaks in the November issues of W, Vanity Fair and Vogue. Joining her are C.Z Guest, Mark Shand, brother of Camilla Parker Bowles, and Keira Chaplin, granddaughter of Charlie. Joseph Fiennes will appear in a second set of ads that break in the December issues of the magazines. The campaign, shot by Bruce Weber and styled by Fabien Baron, feature many of the models posed on elephants. The lifestyle ads showcase the brand’s new look under a design team led by Hussein Chalayan, Thierry de Baschmakoff and Alessandra Gradi.
