BASICS TRAINING: Thoughts of war got you down? Concerned about your 401K? First Lady Laura Bush has the answer…shop. Even as her husband is steering the nation into war with Iraq, Mrs. Bush was spotted popping into 550 Seventh Avenue on Monday afternoon, reportedly into the studio of Oscar de la Renta. His office did not return calls seeking comment.
GIRLS ON FILM: You can’t keep Tara Subkoff out of Paris. The Imitation of Christ designer, who staged a guerrilla show outside of Christian Dior last season, is screening a 10-minute film tonight at the Hussenot Gallery. The characters in the film wear the spring collection already shown in New York.
DESIGNING JOHN MALKOVICH: Actor and self-admited fashion fan John Malkovich, a front-row guest at Ungaro’s show on Friday, said he’s almost ready to launch his signature men’s line. "I’m off to Florence soon to work on it," he said. "At this point, it’s just a question of timing. It will happen." Malkovich is in Paris currently directing "Hysteria," a Terry Johnson play, at the Marigny Theatre.
KEEP ON ROLLING: Rock ’n’ roll isn’t only on the runway soundtrack. A new French version of Rolling Stone, the magazine created in 1967 by Jann Wenner, was feted Friday at Man Ray with a showcase of new French bands. Published by IXO Publishing, the debut issue features a group photo of 14 European and American artists, including Peter Gabriel and the members of Cassius. Wenner, who has been spotted at shows this week with Bette Midler and designer Matt Nye, stopped by to show his support and was joined by Robin Williams, Chris Tucker and Mick Hucknall of Simply Red.
FROM BELGIUM, WITH LOVE: It might not quite be the Antwerp Six, but three of Belgium’s fashion luminaries are headed to Moscow for a group fashion show. Véronique Branquinho, Walter Van Beirendonck and Dirk Bikkembergs will stage their first shows in Russia on Oct. 17. Russia’s Alba Moda fashion organization invited the designers. Meanwhile, Van Beirendonck will travel to St. Petersburg for a solo show on Oct. 19.
JUST JOSH-IN: There are only two degrees of separation between designer Helmut Lang and actor Josh Lucas, star of "Sweet Home Alabama." Both are close friends of Lang model regular Cordula. "That’s how I got to meet Helmut and he started dressing me," said Lucas. "I love his clothing." So much so that he took a few photos during the show, albeit in an unorthodox manner. Even with his front-row vantage point, he held his camera high above his head and snapped off a few shots.
There'll be no rest for those headed to Europe for men's, as Paris just closed the gap with Milan. According to a provisional calendar released by the Chambre Syndicale, Paris Men's Week will now open a day earlier on January 16. BREAKING: Jonathan Saunders is leaving @DVF. The designer has resigned from his position as chief creative officer of Diane von Furstenberg, the company said in a statement on Friday. At the time of his hire, von Furstenberg said Saunders’ arrival symbolized and facilitated her stepping back from the day-to-day duties that occupy the work of a full-time creative director. The British designer joined DVF in May 2016 and was in charge of all product categories. #wwdnews

The movie about Graham – a Hollywood star known for her controversial relationship with a younger Englishman named Peter Turner – is based off a memoir Turned wrote.
