CASSINI’S COMEBACK: For those who felt the nominations for this year’s Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards were looking a little same-old, same-old, the organization’s board of directors felt it was time to shake things up with a new award — which is being given to a 90-year old. The CFDA came up with the new Board of Directors’ Special Tribute, the first of which will go to Oleg Cassini at the June 2 event.
Stan Herman, president of the CFDA and an employee of Cassini in the Fifties, said the award was conceived to further the group’s effort to reconnect with the roots of American fashion, while also creating an opportunity to honor those who might not be considered for the main designer of the year categories.
Cassini said he’s honored by the nod, considering he’s never been acknowledged by the CFDA before. "When you’re at the end of the road, the most important thing is to find out where you stand with your peers," Cassini said. "I have such a record of longevity that it’s very interesting to me that they would recognize my career." The designer — who was publicly at odds with Vogue’s Hamish Bowles over the Jackie Kennedy exhibition Bowles curated at the Met — might just decide to stir up a little controversy here, too. "There’s always some drama there," Cassini said. "I’m looking forward to it."
SOUPED UP: Linda Evangelista’s comeback campaign is steaming ahead. She has wrapped up shooting Fendi’s fall campaign, lensed by Karl Lagerfeld at his Paris studio. Word has it that the campaign will have a Cinecitta movie poster theme.
HOLD THE PICKLES:Aerin Lauder hosted a luncheon for bride-to-be Marjorie Gubelman Thursday at the 21 Club. Tory Burch, Samantha and Serena Boardman and Jane Lauder were on the list. Several guests went the Anna Wintour route by ordering burgers without buns. Last week Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline threw a birthday bash for their daughter, Greta, at the former speakeasy on West 52nd Street. The youngster and 25 of her nearest and dearest celebrated with mini versions of 21’s signature burger.

As one of the most recognizable models in the world, Christy Turlington Burns has an insider’s view of the fashion industry and the allegations of sexual harassment swirling around it. “I can say that harassment and mistreatment have always been widely known and tolerated in the industry. The industry is surrounded by predators who thrive on the constant rejection and loneliness so many of us have experiences at some point in our careers,” Turlington told WWD, along with her suggestions for how the modeling world should protect younger women and men. 24-year-old Jean Prounis is redefining the rules of jewelry. Formerly a studio assistant to Jemima Kirke and a design apprentice at Ghuran, she focuses on handcrafted subtleties and ancient goldsmithing techniques. “There was a really sterile feel in the environment and I wanted to have jewelry with character that shapes how you wear it everyday,” Prounis said. Each piece is hand made in New York, either by Prounis or three other jewelers in the district. #wwdfashion
