MATRIX OVERLOADED: The media blitz behind “The Matrix Reloaded” kicked into overdrive during Wednesday night’s all-black premiere at Los Angeles’ Mann Village Theatre. Those eagerly awaiting the release and those merely curious about the buzz included Amber Valetta, Sandra Bullock, Katie Holmes, Lucy Liu and Demi Moore. Nipping at the heels of current box office champ “X2,” the film also heralds the return of girl power both on and off screen. Jada Pinkett Smith, clad in a black Roland Mouret dress and metal-studded Oscar de la Renta leather jacket, had no qualms about getting rough with co-stars Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne. “I sure did kick their butts, and it was great,” she said. But Italian bombshell Monica Belluci, bound in her usual Dolce & Gabbana corsetry, only got the chance to flex her feminine wiles. “I didn’t get to kick anybody’s butt…but I am dangerous,” she said mischievously. Meanwhile, the men proved they could also cut dashing figures on the red carpet. Reeves and Fishburne wore bespoke suits by Brit Ozwald Boateng, who flew in just to fit them. The designer is on his way to New York to scout locations for a store, which he hopes to open by fall. The film opens nationwide Thursday.
A SWID ENGAGEMENT: Jill Swid and Jonathan Tisch are headed to the altar after six months of dating. The hotelier popped the question Thursday in Manhattan, and Swid accepted. “I’m so gaga,” she said, adding that the proposal was a surprise. Sources say a summer wedding in Southampton is in the works, though Tisch’s spokesman would not confirm it. The bridegroom’s first marriage to Laura Steinberg, daughter of Gayfryd and Saul Steinberg — a wedding long remembered as the ultimate in Eighties decadence — ended in divorce.
PARISIAN LIFE: Trust Madonna to draw a stylish crowd. In Paris last week for a private concert at the trendy restaurant, Cantine du Faubourg, she attracted the likes of John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Eva Herzigova, Emmanuelle Seigner, Luc Besson and Philippe Starck. Only about 400 happy few were invited, but her seven-song performance was broadcast live on a local radio station.
BODY OF CHRIST: One unexpected fashion international in the front row at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week in Sydney last week was Imitation of Christ’s Tara Subkoff. In town putting the finishing touches on costumes for a Sydney Dance Co. production, called “Underland,” Subkoff had time to check out just one show — Akira Isogawa — who has, coincidentally, designed costumes for three previous SDC productions. Commissioned from New York-based choreographer Stephen Petronio, “Underland” features music by Nick Cave and opens May 27 at the Sydney Opera House. It’s Subkoff’s second collaboration with Petronio — last year she designed costumes for his City Of Twist production at New York’s Joyce Theatre.“I’m a huge fan of Nick Cave, and I think there’s a sort of darker feeling to the whole piece — it’s a little bit Goth,” said Subkoff in the costume department of the SDC’s Wharf 4 harborfront headquarters. The costumes include a reconstructed black mesh singlet dress, white T-shirts with skull graphics designed by her brother, Daniel Subkoff, and some less-Gothic red half tutus and hot pink Oroton bras bought in Sydney.
Subkoff added she’d be back in town for opening night, and also might return to stage a fashion presentation of her own. “I think in New York right now, people are having a difficult time. There’s not the excitement that I think there is in other places. It’s really exciting to leave and go to other places.”
DAY JOB: TV’s “Soap Talk” host, Lisa Rinna, and husband Harry Hamlin feted the opening of their Belle Gray boutique with a party last week, luring throngs of Angelenos over the mountain to 13812 Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, Calif. The 1,100-square-foot boutique, named after the couple’s daughters’ middle names, carries Sanctuary, Von Dutch and Alvin Valley, among other contemporary labels. “I went in my closet with a pad, wrote down all the lines I buy and that’s how I shopped,” said Rinna. “I think $2,000 is a good day in retail and we did 10 times that last night,” she said last Tuesday, noting more than half of the store shelves were empty. Hamlin oversaw the construction, which includes white wood walls and dark wood and seagrass floors. “I do this when I have to. It’s not my occupation of choice,” quipped the actor.
As for the valley location, urbanites marveled. “It’s like a field trip,” said Decades owner Cameron Silver, who turned out along with an autograph-signing Eve, Cindy Crawford and Rinna’s “Melrose Place” colleague, Kelly Rutherford. “It’s so close but a different world.”

“It’s life, I’m going to face it,” @mingxi11 sighed. “I fell, but you know, I think the most important thing is that I get back up. I had the love, the help from my sister — the girl next to me Gizele [Oliveira] — she’s so nice. When I went backstage everybody was trying to comfort me like ‘Oh Ming, it’s OK.’ I’m really, really touched. I think it’s them who gave me the courage to go back on stage for the finale,” Xi told WWD of her fall at the @victoriassecret fashion show. “You know, I think audiences expect a certain performance so I have to deliver to them what they’re expecting to a certain degree. “I just wanted to create this fully rounded character, but I do think what excited me most was just the opportunity to give a group of people representation that I feel needs it. I like to do characters in projects that stand for something and Karolina definitely does, so that was really exciting to me,” @ginnygardner says of her new role in @hulu’s “The Runaways.” Gardner plays Karolina Dean, a queer superhero, which is a rarity for @marvel.
