MOVE OVER J.LO: Gwen Stefani, front femme fatale of No Doubt and duet pal to Eve and Moby, told WWD on Friday night she’s in talks to produce her own contemporary line based on the clothes she already designs for herself. Although a favorite among designers — John Galliano is swathing her in Dior for her upcoming nuptials to Brit rocker Gavin Rossdale of Bush — the 33-year-old singer admits that this new project was inevitable.

“For some reason people get a kick out of my clothes,” mused Stefani, who took the trophy for best Rock Style at the 2001 VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards. As a teen during her band’s early years she sewed her stage wardrobe, and later, for the band’s first major tour, she turned to a friend to create her wild ensembles.
“I’m not a genius like Galliano. But it’s also not going to be a mass line,” she added. “It’ll probably be more boutiquey. We’re still working out the price points.”
Stefani declined to publicly release the label name, although it won’t be her own. Nor did she want to identify her co-designer, although she did admit it was a stylist with whom she’s collaborated with for the last year. It’s widely know, however, that her stylist is Andrea Lieberman — who also works with Jennifer Lopez and Faith Hill. As for the manufacturer, she’s also staying mum until the ink is dry on the deal.
But Stefani would say the line is expected to be ready for a fall 2003 delivery. “This is not about doing this for a big cash out. It’s a creative project that will hopefully grow. I’ve been in my band for 16 years, and I love it. But to be able to do something else creatively is really important to me.”
