POSH WELCOME: Posh and Becks — otherwise known as Victoria and David Beckham — received the New York fashion world’s version of a royal welcome Thursday night when Anna Wintour, editor in chief of Vogue, threw a dinner in the couple’s honor at Soho House. Expected guests included Claire Danes, Mario Testino, Diane Von Furstenberg, Iman and David Bowie, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein. Are they on Anna’s cover plans for fall?
SHE’S A SUPERSTAR: This is turning out to be Donna Karan’s year. While she’s nominated for women’s designer of the year at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards on Monday, Karan also just found out she’ll be the “superstar” honoree at the Fashion Group International Night of Stars on Oct. 30, during its 20th anniversary presentation. The rest of the honorees haven’t yet been finalized, but FGI has selected Cipriani 42nd Street as its venue again, while the theme this year will be “Dreamweavers: Those Who Inspire.”
CRYSTAL BALL: The organizers of the CFDA Fashion Awards are fond of calling the event the Oscars of the fashion world. Now the event even has its own pre-awards designer suite, courtesy of the event underwriter, Swarovski. Nadja Swarovski has been hosting the “Swarovski Crystal Suite” this week at the company’s 57th Street offices, inviting nominees, presenters, honorees and some guests to browse a selection of designer merchandise and to borrow clothes, shoes and bags for the event. Pieces from 26 collections are represented, including Calvin Klein, Vera Wang, Stella McCartney, Catherine Malandrino, Badgley Mischka, Heatherette, Allegra Hicks, Roberto Cavalli, Daniel Swarovski Paris, Diane Von Furstenberg, Zac Posen, Gunmetal, Hollywould and Ungaro.
As for Swarovski herself, she turned to Alexander McQueen, who’s being honored as International Designer of the Year, to design a black engineered lace skirt and silk cinch-waist jacket, with jewelry from Daniel Swarovski Paris, natch.
EYES ON THE PRIZE: For the first time, the National Design Awards will have a fashion category for excellence in apparel, footwear or accessories design. A jury including Fern Mallis, architect Rafael Viñoly, Nike global creative director John Hoke 3rd, interior designer DD Allen and BMW Group chief designer Christopher Bangle will knock around some names before the bugle call of nominees in mid-July. Rosario Dawson, Anna Paquin, Bridget Hall and Jaime King are expected at Tuesday’s Coach-sponsored kickoff party for the National Design Awards at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum.ITALY ROCKS: Blumarine, DSquared and Versace are going on tour. Sort of. Anna Molinari of Blumarine will outfit Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears for their upcoming works, while Dan and Dean Caten of DSquared and Donatella Versace are stripping down with Christina Aguilera.
The Milan-based DSquared brothers are providing the first three looks for Aguilera and Justin Timberlake’s Justisfied and Stripped World Tour, which kicks off Tuesday in Phoenix. The twins traveled to Los Angeles several times to meet with the blonde pop pixy and came up with a slinky, one-piece, backless leather halter jumpsuit stained with mud and dust for her opening song, Dirty. Other looks include utilitarian hot pants, stretch sweat T-shirts and a tailored black wool coat lined in silk fuchsia. Not exactly demure, but then again, Aguilera has never been one to shy away from the overt — and often obscene. Aguilera, who is the face of Versace’s fall ad campaign, and Timberlake also will wear a series of costumes designed by Donatella.
Meanwhile, Molinari is creating part of the wardrobe for Lopez in her new movie, “Shall We Dance,” which starts shooting at the end of June and also stars Richard Gere. In particular, Lopez asked for a leopard-skin short coat and several soft knits the designer is well known for.
Spears has selected a few romantic pink and coral dresses and sweaters for the upcoming photo shoot for her new album cover.
STILL NO GIORGIO: The Oscar-tied unveiling of Rodeo Drive’s Walk of Style, a tribute created to honor distinguished designers and style legends for their contributions in the ever-merging worlds of fashion and entertainment, came to a screeching halt, along with the rest of the week’s Hollywood happenings, when the Iraqi war began. While the plaque marking inaugural honoree Giorgio Armani is still on hold, the 14-foot Robert Graham sculpture serving as a centerpiece at Rodeo Drive and Dayton Way for the “Walk” — modeled after Hollywood’s famous Walk of Fame — is finally seeing the light of day at an unveiling June 11, followed by a VIP reception — attended by the artist at the Bulgari flagship a few steps away. The contemporary nude female torso, carved from solid aluminum and mounted on bronze, also will be cast into bronze maquettes for the honorees. As for the first inductee, the date for Armani’s appearance will be announced at the ceremony. Organizers insist it will take place this year.OH, HENRY: J. Crew has a hot item on its hands — and it’s not for sale. Since the retailer’s summer catalog dropped on May 17, featuring a stuffed pooch named Henry that was custom-made for J. Crew in its big summer patchwork statement, the company has been inundated with calls to purchase the item. But only a handful were produced for window displays, said a Crew spokeswoman, and were never intended for sale, leading to a fairly obvious refrain: How much is that doggie in the window?
SUZY ON TOP: WWD’s own Suzy columnist Aileen Mehle is being feted by the American Ballet Theatre with the Movado Award for “Woman of the Year.” Carolina Herrera will cohost a luncheon on June 10 at the Metropolitan Opera House honoring Mehle and philanthropist Judy Peabody, who also will receive the award. “I think ABT is the finest ballet company in the world,” said Mehle. “I’ve been associated with it since the days of Lucia Chase.”

“I just wanted to create this fully rounded character, but I do think what excited me most was just the opportunity to give a group of people representation that I feel needs it. I like to do characters in projects that stand for something and Karolina definitely does, so that was really exciting to me,” @ginnygardner says of her new role in @hulu’s “The Runaways.” Gardner plays Karolina Dean, a queer superhero, which is a rarity for @marvel. “Azzedine has been one of the biggest influences in my life. He has always been such a strong, loving, fatherly figure to me. I call him Papa. His designs are indescribably unique, they are pieces of art. He knew how to make the female form look its loveliest. I have so many memories of him; my favorite might be during my first show with him in Paris. He liked me and he wanted to help me get more work. He called all his friends at Kenzo and Comme des Garcons, and asked them to book me. They said, ‘But she can’t walk!’ And he said, ‘but she has such a great ass!' His friendship and support has been the great privilege of my career. I can't imagine life without him. Repose en paix mon Papa.” - @stephanieseymour tells @wwd. #wwdfashion (📷: @steveeichner) #alaia #azzedinealaia
Azzedine Alaïa, flanked by two of his closest friends, models Stephanie Seymour and Naomi Campbell.
He designed Seymour’s dress for her 1995 wedding to Peter Brant, and treated Campbell (who famously called him Papa), like a daughter. For more on the legendary designer, tap the link in bio. #wwdfashion #alaia #azzedinealaia
