THINK PINK: Emanuel Ungaro, who showed his couture collection Wednesday, has a secret project in the works. The word is that the designer is pouring his energies — and funneling the resources of Ferragamo, which owns his company — into a new diffusion line called "Fuchsia," one of the house’s signature colors. Expect a fall unveiling and a collection positioned in between the top line and the jeans-driven Fever line.
UNDERCOVER ANGEL: What’s it like to be on the receiving end of the paparazzi frenzy during Fashion Week? Filmmaker David Furnish is getting a bird’s-eye view during couture, escorting Elizabeth Hurley through front rows and fashion parties — all the time wired with a fiber-optic camera hidden in his tie-pin and a microphone stitched discreetly into his collar. Our suggested title for his latest documentary: Hurley Burly.
GAVEL CHIC: It may be impossible to place an order for a new couture number by the now retired Yves Saint Laurent, but collectors are still hot for his clothes. A sale of vintage couture pieces last week at Drouot in Paris set a record at auction for a YSL couture dress. An unidentified buyer shelled out $17,515 for a jersey "Poliakoff" dress from Saint Laurent’s 1965 Mondrian collection. Meanwhile, speculation is heating up that Saint Laurent muse Loulou de la Falaise will soon open a boutique in Paris to showcase a new fashion project in the post-YSL couture age. Spotted Wednesday night at the Colette party for the relaunch of Saint Laurent’s "Nasty Lulu" comic book, de la Falaise declined to comment.
CAMERA READY: Kate Hudson has been attracting quite a bit of attention on the streets of Manhattan, where she’s filming Paramount's "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" with Matthew McConaughey. But it may not be the?pair’s good looks that are stopping traffic. Our guess: It’s this season's Tod's accessories, which Hudson sports throughout the film, including the Miky Easy Bag in black-and-white leather, the Jesus Sandals in orange suede and the Sinuosa Evening Bag in black satin. Hurry, fashionistas, get those names on the waiting list.
MAKING AN ENTRANCE: Couture week has been weak on big-name celebrities, which may be the reason that Gwyneth Paltrow’s presence in the front row at Valentino on Wednesday night went practically unnoticed. Not so Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, who made a grand entrance — more than halfway through the show. No matter. Socialites were quickly rearranged, clearing a seat for Combs and one for his ex-flame Kim Porter.
HOT ROCKS: De Beers LV unveiled key pieces of its new diamond jewelry collection at London’s One Aldwych hotel Wednesday — and revealed plans for a new, high-tech diamond. The collection is divided into four sections: signature, bridal, classics and watches, with starting prices that range from $750 to $4,500. The signature collection includes the Bubble Collar — a flexible necklace made from 2,400 diamonds — while the classic collection features heart and cross pendants. The De Beers LV team also plans to launch the "De Beers Cut" diamond — a "high-performance" octagonal, 57-facet rock that reflects much more light than most square-cut specimens. The new diamond will debut when the first De Beers LV store opens on London’s Piccadilly in early November. Meanwhile, De Beers LV clearly isn’t taking the romantic route for its first ad campaign. Nick Knight’s photos will be accompanied by such smug one-liners as: "I wouldn’t want to make anybody jealous" and "I wonder why my friends are looking so depressed."
