TWO VIEWS ON SUMMER SAVINGS: While customers mobbed Saks Fifth Avenue in New York Wednesday to receive $25 gift cards if they purchased $75 worth of cosmetics and fragrances, cosmetic associates continued to picket outside the store handing out fliers that read: “While Saks may be offering you summer savings, you may be surprised to learn that the gift at the collective bargaining table Saks management has offered us, its cosmetic associates, is 20 percent off our salaries, plus further reductions in benefits!” That didn’t seem to deter customers, who grabbed the fliers and walked in. After shelling out their $75 on beauty products, customers stormed the courtesy counters for the gift card. They had to give their names and addresses to get one and were required to use it that day only.

Regarding the contract talks, a Saks spokeswoman said, “We are still negotiating. Any time you are in negotiations you have a starting point and you go up and down. Nothing is final.”

And about the beauty promotion, Jacqui Lividini, senior vice president of fashion merchandising, said it was “extremely successful.”

DECKED OUT: Designer Alice Roi decided to forgo the usual pomp and circumstance of showroom appointments for resort 2004. Instead Roi teamed up with fine arts photographer Lisa Kereszi, a former assistant to Nan Goldin, to create an image book. To celebrate the moody photos, Roi and Kereszi held court at Pier 59’s new outdoor bar, The Deck, Tuesday night. Sunset revelers included actresses Rosario Dawson and Rashida Jones, MTV VJ Su Chin Pak, model Ana Beatriz Barros, designer Charlotte Ronson, Helen Schifter and Tory Burch.
