VIVA VIVIA: Vivia Ferragamo just can't help it — she’s got leather accessories in her blood. A granddaughter of the late, great shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo, the 28-year-old Vivia unveiled her first line of accessories and ready-to-wear in London at the Designers' Exhibition. The young collection, known as Vivia, is filled with leather and suede bags and shoes that have an arts-and-crafts, ethnic feel. Some of the shoes are even hand painted. The clothes-pareo skirts and crocheted wraps — have a bohemian feeling. "I want the clothing and accessories to work together in a very easy way. Thisis a collection for a woman who travels, and doesn't want to bring a lot with her," said Ferragamo, who is based in London but manufactures the collection in Italy. Ferragamo, who graduated at FIT and who has worked for Saks Fifth Avenue and Ungaro in Paris, said her collection is separate from the family business. "I have my family’s blessing, and they’re backing me up, but this is a totally separate company."
MAIA’S MOMENT: Damien Hirst’s wife, Maia Norman, has just unveiled her first collection — and it could light up a room. The California-born Norman, a surfing fan, used shades of yellow, orange and pink Day-Glo and bold leaf prints for her dresses, trousers and cowboy shirts. The collection, known as Mother of Pearl, has been selling privately in England until now, but Norman is hoping to take it to the U.S. And no, Hirst — the British artist famous for making works of art out of dissected animals — didn’t have a hand in it at all. "Aesthetically, this is a completely separate thing," Norman said. "Damian is the best husband and father, but he’s not involved in the collection."
WATCHING PAINT DRY: Standing on their last legs, buyers and editors waited more than an hour outside the Roland Mouret show. What was the holdup? They had to wait for the dove gray paint on the floor to dry, one of the designer's reps admitted. And on that highly professional note, Fake London supplied a fake address for its show, leaving buyers and the press scratching their heads as to where to go. The post code read W2 when it should have read W12. The two locations are about 20 minutes from one another by car — on a good day.GROWING UP: Erin O'Connor is wearing her hair long again — and premiered the look at Julien Macdonald's show Saturday night. "I feel more feminine when it's short, but now I've got to pay the mortgage, you know," she said.
TEA FOR TWO: Frost French and Pringle opted for tea and fairy cakes — cupcakes to you and me — over the usual fashion fare of champagne and sushi. Before the show, Frost French invited guests to the open-air theatre at Regent’s Park and handed them a white china tea cup and saucer and a wicker basket filled with iced fairy cakes and egg and watercress sandwiches. When the tea drinkers — who included London DJ Nellee Hooper and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver — finished, they took their cups to a tea leaf reader. Pringle held its show in the Art Deco Bidborough Tearooms and stuffed guests full of cakes and bite-size sandwiches.
ROTTEN PEACHES: Several designers have referenced her summer anthem "F--- the Pain Away" at past runway shows, but now Imitation of Christ can claim the inclusion of raunchy rapper Peaches as a model. The lascivious lyricist, whose album "The Peaches of Peaches" is due for a U.S. release in October, will be part of the IOC performance art tonight at the scheduled 8 p.m. show, thanks to a connection through designer Tara Subkoff. (Her tour manager is IOC’s music director.) Also rumored to be in store is a performance by the Brooklyn group Black Dice.
GRACE CODDINGTON MULTIPLIED: Thanks to a tribute from Bergdorf Goodman, approximately 85 framed images from Grace Coddington’s book, "Grace Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue," will be on display in the store’s windows this week. A medley of mannequins with shocks of red hair, in homage to Grace of course, will also be featured wearing designs from YSL, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs. "I wanted to have a salute to fashion," said Robert Burke, vice president and senior fashion director at Bergdorf’s, "and I thought Grace’s work best represented that glamour and sophistication through a variety of fashion shoots over the 30 years."
PHAT PARTY: It looks like Russell Simmons is taking lessons from Puffy. The king of hip-hop men’s wear is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Phat Farm with a fashion show at Bryant Park Sunday and then a party at the Park in Chelsea. The invitation pokes fun at P. Diddy’s Video Music Awards post-party invite. While Diddy had a strict dress code and an even more strict door policy, Simmons’ invite reads: "Dress code: None" and "Only Donald Trump, P. Diddy and Sharon of Jivamukti Yoga will be admitted without invite. All others must present invite at the door."
SALUD!: Is Dos Caminos, the Mexican restaurant masterminded by Blue Fin’s Steve Hanson and Canteen’s John Alexander, shaping up to be fashion week’s new watering hole? The Park Avenue South boite, which officially opened Monday, has already served its signature table-side guacamole and prickly pear margaritas to the likes of Natalia Vodianova, Karolina Kurkova, Heidi Klum, Kal Ruttenstein, Glenda Bailey, Nicole Miller, John Varvatos, Fern Mallis and Zoe Cassavetes.
FORBES 400: Ralph Lauren remains at the top of the fashion pack in terms of wealth, according to the Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans, released this week. At number 88 with a fortune of $2 billion (the same as last year in worth) Lauren is the only major designer on the list, though a slew of people from retail and more moderate fashion firms also made the cut. Among them are the Waltons, the heirs to the Wal-Mart fortune (4); Philip Knight, ceo of Nike (33), tied with E-bay founder Pierre Omidyar. eBay’s ceo, Meg Whitman, comes in at 300. Media magnates and TV titans were more abundant. Among those making the list were Viacom ceo Sumner Redstone (18); S.I. Newhouse, the chairman of Advance Publications, which owns WWD, and his brother, Donald, who heads the newspaper division of the company (20); Rupert Murdoch (28); John Malone (139); Mortimer Zuckerman (185); Oprah Winfrey (229); and Barry Diller (256). So where’s Martha Stewart? She dropped off the list after her stock plummeted in the wake of the ImClone scandal.
