KHAN’S TURN: Another day, another designer. First Lady Michelle Obama walked into Tuesday morning’s National Prayer Service in a custom Naeem Khan ivory wool-appliqué coat with a jeweled neckline and trim and coordinating dress. Khan said he made the outfit about a month ago for an occasion without knowing which one exactly. (That seems to be standard procedure per order of the First Lady’s staff, based on what other designers have said.) Having had his designs worn by Obama eight times, Khan said, “There is never a confirmation for what it’s going to be for.”

Asked if he felt as though he had missed his inaugural weekend chance after seeing the First Lady in Thom Browne at Monday’s swearing-in, Khan said, “It’s an ongoing thing. She looked so beautiful yesterday. You might feel a little sad but you have to contemplate the process. I know she loves my things and there will be more things that come along.”
The Art Deco accents and Aztec pattern used in the wool appliqué were inspired by Khan’s high-flying lifestyle. “I travel the world all the time — to India, to South America, Europe — I just got back from Mexico,” he said. “I love traveling. Most of my collections are based on some place somewhere that gets lost in your mind until you design a new collection.”
