LONDON — Tom Ford gave his signature a workout during a personal appearance at Harvey Nichols here Thursday to fete the launch of his Private Blend fragrance collection.

Despite unseasonably sweltering weather, a queue of Ford fans snaked around the Knightsbridge department store to have bottles of scent, created with Ford's beauty license holder, the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., signed by the debonair designer.

Within minutes, stocks of 50-ml. bottles of Neroli Portofino and Tobacco Vanille, Ford's personal favorite, had run dry. The designer, however, wasn't bothered by the thought of having innumerable smell-alikes.

"I'm happy they want it," he said. "It means I've made something people enjoy, and that's the point."

Ford also unveiled 11 Private Blend-themed windows featuring installations he'd designed around the collection — a departure for Harvey Nichols since such displays are traditionally styled in-house. The displays, which line the front of the store, will be in place for one month.
