NEW YORK — The Lyon, Mode City trade show in Lyon, France, has become a larger and more important presence in the world of lingerie, textiles and swimwear since its inception in the mid-Eighties.

This year’s Aug. 31-Sept. 2 edition for spring-summer 2003 will showcase 40 new collections of brand-name and designer foundations, daywear, sleepwear, hosiery and men’s and children’s underwear, totaling 470 international brands from 33 countries.

With representation for the first time from a number of exhibitors from South Korea, China, Turkey and Brazil, there also will be a lineup of names exhibiting at the Lyon lingerie edition for the first time, including Wolford, Manuel Canovas and John Galliano, who showed his first innerwear collection at the Salon International de la Lingerie earlier this year in Paris. Galliano will unveil his swimwear collection in Lyon.

“We have had to open up an extra demi hall because the show has grown so dramatically,” said show manager Claire Jonathan, noting that the space has been expanded by 20 percent in the sprawling Eurexpo Exhibition Center to about 650,000 square feet.

Jonathan said an area called Future, a concept introduced in April at a textile fair in Lille, France, will show fabrics of a “unique property, and should prove to be very important at the Lyon show.”

New additions to the show will include:

l An expanded and innovative lingerie forum.

l A larger swimwear area.

l A separate runway show of lingerie in Halls 4 and 6.

l An independent runway show for swimwear in Halls 2 and 3.

l Fashion forecaster Jos Berry will make a presentation on the connection between lingerie and swimwear.

l Beauty house Lancaster will host a skin care seminar that targets sun worshippers and the swimwear market.

There will also be a young designer area called Expression Dessous Lingerie that will include 18 fashion brands: A-Day, Active Line Lingerie, Anne Louise Roswald, Beau Bra, Catherine Goux, Cris-Cris, Daniel Granier, Eva Rachline, Fishbelly, Grazzia Lliani, Janet Reger, Jenny Bolton, Sophie Malagola, Sabrina Nadal, Vanina Vesparini, Vanita, Via Mode and Yael Landman.

Jonathan noted that the Intefilière segment, which will highlight textiles for fall-winter 2003-2004, has grown to include 311 exhibitors from 30 countries.

Featuring a range of fabrics that also addresses the couture, ready-to-wear, activewear and men’s wear markets, the Intefilière has already registered a 4 percent booth increase with new exhibitors from Asia, Europe and South America. Overall, 1,500 samples of fabrics will be exhibited.

A new trend forum called “Partis-Pris” will showcase “surprising products” on two large billboards: One will focus on innovation through technology, while the other will spotlight trends gleaned through traditional and craftlike methods, said Jonathan. Three major themes will underscore a fabrics trend guide: Order, Frivolity and Enchantment.

Regarding swimwear for the spring-summer 2003 season, 320 fashion brands for men, women and children will be exhibited from 25 countries.

A young designer section for swimwear called Expression Dessous Balneaire will include 12 brands: Bas Bleu, Chaslyn Lingerie, Cotton Real & Co., Deep Sea, Eveden Ltd., Fishbelly, Lullaby Beach, Noot, Omok, Sophie Malagola, The Kikoy Co. and Y’RUS Beach Cocktails.
