MILAN — Gucci has revealed a crop of bags especially designed to celebrate its 85th anniversary this year.
Creative director Frida Giannini has reworked the brand’s iconic Hobo bag and crafted it in new materials, adorning the styles with a sleeker bit and with brass and enamel plates marked with the celebratory year. The side with the plate is intended to be worn on the inside.
Key looks in the collection include the “patchwork” bag, which has multicolored strips of reptile skins that form a geometric collage, and “web tartan,” a style combining a stylized velvet plaid with a handwoven silk featuring the double G logo in velvet.
The anniversary pieces will be sold only in Gucci’s directly operated stores worldwide for a limited period from July through December.
Gucci’s story started in 1921 when Guccio Gucci rented a small shop on Florence’s central Via della Vigna Nuova, founding Valigeria Guccio Gucci. At first, he bought and sold luggage to tourists, and later he started making his own leather goods.
