NEW YORK — Tamara Mellon didn’t look too far to find a chief for Halston.
Jimmy Choo’s president and creative director, who has recently been given the mandate to simultaneously build the management team at Halston, is bringing in Bonnie Takhar as president and chief executive officer of the fashion brand. Takhar is currently chief commercial officer of Jimmy Choo Ltd., and is expected to relocate from London to New York for the job this summer.
Hilco Consumer Capital LLC and The Weinstein Co. bought Halston in March and hired Mellon as an adviser. She retains her duties at Jimmy Choo.
“Halston is an American icon; being part of our royal culture and being right in the middle of a social movement,” Takhar said, adding she was looking forward to the opportunity “to build upon such a rich heritage — to help position this beloved brand as true American luxury.”
Prior to joining Jimmy Choo, Takhar was at Nautica Enterprises Inc., where she served as the New York-based global president of Earl Jean until 2004. She joined the denim brand in 1999 as London-based ceo of Earl Jean Europe. She also worked at Donna Karan International and the Nicole Farhi Group.
At Halston, Takhar technically replaces James Ammeen, who was the prior owner of the brand and held the ceo title. Ammeen remains on Halston’s board.
At Halston, Takhar will work closely with Mellon and stylist Rachel Zoe, who is part of the brand’s creative advisory team alongside Mellon. Halston plans to appoint a designer at some time.
“Bonnie is a bright and ambitious woman who has had an exciting international career to date,” said Mellon, who is on Halston’s board of directors, in a statement. “She is well-connected in the industry and used to playing on the apparel world stage. Her experiences with Jimmy Choo and Earl Jean eminently qualify her to manage the reintroduction of Halston into the luxury brand sector. There is no doubt in my mind she will add great strategic value and leadership.”
