NEW YORK -- Hank Waeckerle has been named director of the ready-to-wear sales division of Oscar de la Renta Ltd.

He will supervise sales and merchandising for the firm's U.S. and international businesses and will report to Oscar de la Renta, chairman, and Jeffry M. Aronsson, who earlier this month was named chief executive officer of the company.

Waeckerle, who was managing director of Carolyne Roehm, replaces Syd Shaw, who has become less involved following surgery for a back problem several months ago.

"I am going to be doing pretty much the same thing, doing trunk shows and selling in the showroom," Shaw said, but pointed out that she would have less hands-on involvement in the day-to-day workings of the company.

Syd Shaw is the wife of Gerald Shaw, president of the de la Renta company and the designer's partner since 1965. De la Renta on Monday again denied rumors the partnership between Shaw and himself was breaking up, although when asked he would not comment on the status of the ownership of the company. Gerald Shaw could not be reached for comment.

As for Shaw's operational status in the company, de la Renta said, "Both Gerald and Hank will be working together -- Gerald in manufacturing and Hank in merchandising."

De la Renta added that Waeckerle will be involved in the new boutiques the company is planning to open this fall in Hong Kong and Sydney, Australia, as well as a store in Monte Carlo, which is being negotiated. The boutiques will carry women's and men's merchandise.

Waeckerle, who has been with several designer firms on SA, was with Roehm from 1989 until last January.
