NEW YORK — Tommy Hilfiger is moving into show business.
The designer and The Atlantic Group, the umbrella company that includes Atlantic Records, have formed a partnership to launch a TV series that will air on MTV and VH-1, starting in June.
Tentatively entitled “The Tip,” the show will feature Hilfiger as the celebrity host. The series will be taped in five-minute segments, each of which will feature a different recording artist. Among the musical artists slated to appear in the first group of segments are Atlantic recording stars Phil Collins, En Vogue, Evan Dando of The Lemonheads, Tori Amos and Stevie Nicks. Initially, between six and 10 segments will be tested.
The concept of the show, according to Hilfiger, is an impromptu “closet search,” where Hilfiger will visit the closets of musical artists, speaking to them about their wardrobes and how their clothes relate to their lifestyles. The show will have a tongue-in-cheek attitude. The segments will be filmed around the world.
“I have always believed that music and fashion are inherently connected and wanted to develop a project that combined the two,” said Hilfiger. “I decided on a format that would allow me to speak directly to musicians about their own personal style and reveal the motivations and influences behind their work.”
The show is expected to continue after the initial segments, and Hilfiger has plans to look into the closets of sports figures, film celebrities and veejays.
