NEW YORK — Sen. Hillary Clinton swung by Jessica Seinfeld’s baby shower and fundraiser for her charity, Baby Buggy Inc., which collects new and gently used clothing and gear for underprivileged children in New York, Monday morning at Fred’s at Barneys New York.
“I just admired the idea of this,” Clinton said. “Jessica has talked to me about it for 18 months and I wanted to help. With the economy kind of down, I can’t overstate the importance to get help to mothers when they have babies.”
And speaking of the economy, does she see it turning around anytime soon?
“I’m concerned about the economy. I don’t think we have a good economic policy in this country and with the war in Iraq and the challenge of SARS, it will be a long time until the attitude changes with very difficult consequences to the states and cities like New York,” said Clinton, who was on her way to a health department meeting after addressing the crowd.
Seinfeld said she started Baby Buggy in 2001 after her first child, Sascha, was born, and she was inundated with gifts. She gave birth five weeks ago to her second child, Julian Kal.
“My little idea has flourished and blossomed. When Sascha was born, I received a bunch of gifts. I thought there was a more productive way to use the gifts, not that I gave those gifts away,” she quickly added. “There is too much excess in this city.”
So far, Baby Buggy has donated 35,000 items of baby gear and clothing to such places as homeless shelters, teenage maternity homes and foster care agencies. In addition to individual donors, Seinfeld has received donations from corporations such as Old Navy, Ralph Lauren Childrenswear and Children’s Place.
