NEW YORK — India will have a new fashion week next year, courtesy of IMG and local cosmetics brand Lakme.
The firms have teamed to create Lakme Fashion Week, scheduled for March 28-April 1 at Mumbai's National Centre for Performing Arts.
Lakme has been involved in India Fashion Week, which is still being produced by the Fashion Design Council of India, and features about 45 to 50 designers.
Lakme Fashion Week will have a more select group of designers for the international market, and is anticipated to spotlight about 20 fashion shows alongside exhibition stalls, seminars and workshops.
One of the aims is to develop India into a global fashion player, and some of these designers will qualify to participate in other IMG-owned fashion events worldwide.
"We see our new initiative, Lakme Fashion Week, as the next step in the growth of the fashion industry here and overseas," Anil Chopra, vice president of Lakme Lever, parent company of the Lakme brand, said in a statement.
IMG's other international fashion ventures include Olympus Fashion Week in New York, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles, Mercedes-Benz Australian Week and the Singapore Fashion Festival.
