THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT: Avon says its new brand, Mark, will enable young women to be the chief executives of their own companies, but the beauty giant wants the experience to be fun. On Wednesday, Avon announced a deal with talent firm Creative Artists Agency to “provide entertainment marketing strategies” to help promote the 300-item cosmetics, skin care and fragrance collection. Tie-ins could include film, television and music, as well as alliances with celebrities.
ELDERLY COUPLES: Following up on an earlier expression of interest, EB Acquisition Ltd., an Ohio-based investment firm, made a $5.50-a-share cash offer for Elder-Beerman Stores Corp., a 3.8 percent premium to its closing stock price on Wednesday that would value the department store retailer at $62.7 million. As reported, the Dayton, Ohio-based chain is negotiating exclusively about a possible acquisition with a single unidentified party. The offer was communicated in a letter to the store’s board of directors, which asked, among other questions, why no other offers were being considered, when the exclusivity period ends and if members of management are among the parties bidding for the store. Elder-Beerman said earlier in the day that it “does not anticipate having any additional comment on this subject at its annual meeting,” scheduled to be held in Dayton today.
