J. MENDEL OPENS ASPEN STORE: Skiers in Aspen for the holidays have another luxe shopping spot at their disposal. J. Mendel, known for its sumptuous furs, opened a store at 461 East Hopkins Avenue in the fabled Colorado ski town last Friday. The 1,350-square-foot boutique, designed by architect David Mann, will carry J. Mendel furs as well as its ready-to-wear line and accessories. An official kickoff party will be held at the store on Thursday.

NEW STORE FOR YSL: Yves Saint Laurent is making a new home for itself in the old Levi’s space at 3 East 57th Street. The Gucci Group-owned company is scheduled to open a two-story, 12,170-square-foot store next spring. The unit will carry all YSL product categories including accessories, cosmetics and ready-to-wear. It will also feature the same design concept as its Madison Avenue flagship.

l BARNEYS PROMOTION: Bettina O’Neill has been named vice president and divisional merchandise manager of cosmetics and fragrances for Barneys New York. She had been cosmetics and fragrances buyer for the retailer.

HUFF ADVANCES: Lois Huff has been promoted to senior vice president at Retail Forward, a Columbus, Ohio-based management consultant, where she had been a vice president. She has also been tapped to serve on the company’s executive committee. Huff will continue as manager of the soft goods track in Retail Forward’s North American Intelligence Program and as the program’s consumer shopping behavior specialist. She also specializes in Western European retailing in the firm’s Global Intelligence Program. Huff, 42, joined Retail Forward in October 2001. Prior to that, she was a principal consultant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

PINK SLIP?: LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton might be looking to sell the London-based shirtmaker Thomas Pink. The London Sunday Times reported that Bernard Arnault, chairman of LVMH, had been approached by potential buyers, but sources said LVMH is not seriously considering them. An LVMH spokesman declined comment.
