NEW COATS OF PAINT: Coats PLC has put its fashion unit, which includes Jaeger and Viyella, up for sale and is planning to focus on its core business in thread for apparel, footwear and industrial use. The decision follows an attempt to revamp Jaeger last year. A company spokeswoman said Jaeger had problems with sizing and style for the spring 2002 season. Those issues have been resolved for fall 2002, she said, and no suspension of the collection is contemplated in anticipation of a sale, in which Coats’ fashion brands could be sold together or separately.

CONCORD’S NEW PRESIDENT: Fred Reffsin has been named president of watch firm Concord. In recent months, Reffsin consulted Concord, a division of Movado Group Inc. In this post, he will direct the brand’s worldwide sales and marketing and report to Efraim Grinberg, president and chief executive officer of Movado Group. Previously, Reffsin was ceo of Camdens Inc., and president of Montblanc and Tag Heuer in the U.S.
