SLIMMER PICKINGS: Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu reduced his holdings in Saks Inc. to 17.5 million shares, or 11.9 percent of the 147.4 million shares outstanding, as of July 31, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. A month earlier Slim and his family controlled 18.7 million shares, or 12.7 percent, of Saks. In January 2001, Slim’s stake in Saks stood at 14.8 percent. The holdings are through two companies, Orient Star and Inmobiliaria, and last month’s reductions came from the sale of stock held by Inmobiliaria.
