COMME TO KYOTO: Comme des Garçons has opened a store in Kyoto. The site, at 378 Kameya, Oike, Agaru Gokomachi, Nakagyo-ku, is off the main street of the old Japanese capital. It features black walls, resembling traditional Japanese industrial architecture. The two-story store, which opened last Saturday, offers all of CdG’s product lines in nearly 4,000 square feet (2,060 on the first floor and about 1,900 on the second floor). A spokesman for CdG said one of the most significant things in choosing this shop in Kyoto was to express the brand’s character while preserving Kyoto’s historical meaning, strength and beauty. Projected first-year sales for the shop are $4.3 million(converted from the yen at the current exchange rates).
TALKS INTERRUPTED: Dockworkers’ contract negotiations between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and Pacific Maritime Association have been suspended until Aug. 13, at the union’s request. The old contract has been extended in the meantime. "People are burnt. We’ve all been working long hours," said an ILWU spokesman.
