CHILDREN’S CHARITY: Bloomingdale’s luncheon April 13 for 150 people and a handful of top designers raised $67,000 to support research at the New York University Child Study Center. The amount included 10 percent of designer collection sales on the day, and 15 percent of the revenues from a weeklong Lambertson Truex trunk show at Bloomingdale’s 59th Street store. “Research is the only way to make a difference,” said Brooke Garber Neidich, the center’s board chairman. Added Dr. Harold Koplewicz, director of the Child Study Center: “Ten million children have psychiatric problems, and only one out of five get help.”
DESIGN BONANZA: When this year’s National Design Awards are handed out on Oct. 27, the creative-minded will have three new categories — interior design, design mind and landscape architecture — to compete in. That brings the total number of awards to 10. In recent years, the event’s organizer, the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, has made a concerted effort to bring design to the masses by broadening the types of awards and encouraging winners and nominees to get involved with its educational programs that reach people of all ages. In June, the winners of the Lifetime Achievement, Corporate Achievement and Design Mind awards will be announced as well as the three finalists for the awards for Architecture, Communications, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, Product and Fashion. Winners for those six awards, as well as this year’s design patron, will be revealed at the Oct. 27 gala at the museum’s Fifth Avenue digs, a handsome building Andrew Carnegie once lived in on 91st Street.
AMAZON’S BEBE: Amazon has added Bebe to its growing list of fashion clients for Web site services, the two companies said Monday. Amazon Services Inc., a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc., will build a new online store for Bebe and handle fulfillment and multichannel call operations for the company. Bebe Stores Inc. will manage and update the content of the Web site. The fashion retailer turned to Amazon because its direct sales grew 95 percent in the third quarter, according to the Brisbane, Calif.-based Bebe. “With this agreement, we realize world class scalable operations to support the growth of our direct initiatives and can continue to focus on building and extending our brand,” said Barbara Wamback, Bebe’s chief administrative officer, in a prepared statement. Bebe operates 209 stores in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada under the names Bebe and Bebe Sport. Amazon recently said that it is doing Web sites for Marks & Spencer and Diane von Furstenberg.
