• KISS OF THE COSMOGIRL: Despite teens’ reputed passion for indie labels and offbeat fashion, fame trumped obscurity every time in Cosmogirl’s third annual Kiss of Approval Beauty and Fashion Awards. Tens of thousands of readers joined with editors and celebrities to smack their lips for the year’s best T-shirt, which, they said, came from American Eagle Outfitters; best cuffed jeans, Levi’s; best sneakers, Nike; best tote bag, Tommy Hilfiger, and best store, Pac Sun. The winning items will be highlighted in the fashion coverage in Cosmogirl’s August issue. Kiss of Approval beauty winners, to be featured in the September issue, are Lancôme Juicy Tubes in Daiquiri, deemed the most kissable lip gloss; Cover Girl Cheekers, best blush; Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleanser, best facial cleanser; Chanel Nail Colour in Pirate, trendiest fall color, and Clinique Happy, best daytime fragrance. Up for grabs is a piece of the roughly $31 million teens spend annually on apparel and beauty products, according to a 2002 Rand Youth Poll.
