PENNEY VACANCY: J.C. Penney public relations vice president Rita Trevino Flynn has left the Plano, Tex.-based chain. She joined Penney’s in 1999 and became the company’s first Hispanic officer. Previously, she was a corporate public relations executive at Limited Brands. Before that, she worked on trade issues for the Clinton Administration, served as a White House Correspondent for ABC, and covered the State Department for CBS. A successor has not yet been named.

KELLWOOD’S CLIMB: Shares of Kellwood Co. picked up a solid 4.9 percent gain on the New York Stock Exchange Thursday, closing up $1.76 to $37.98 and easily surpassing the old 52-week high of $36.59 with a new high-water mark of $38.34 in intraday trading. A total of 320,900 shares traded hands, 48.9 percent higher than average. There was no news from the company to prompt the rise, but Sidoti & Co. analyst Christopher Ragazzo noted the trading activity could be ahead of the firm’s second-quarter earnings report, which is due out next Thursday. The broader market, as seen in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index, inched up only 2.97 points, or 0.3 percent, to end the day at 1,003.27.

VUITTON’S OPENING: Louis Vuitton is opening its 5,000-square-foot global store at Americana Manhasset this Saturday. The Manhasset, Long Island, store will carry all of Louis Vuitton’s product categories for men and women, including leather goods, ready-to-wear, accessories, watches, jewelry and shoes.
