• PERRY ELLIS INKS KIDS’ LICENSE: Perry Ellis International has signed a children’s wear license for its Perry Ellis brands with Fishman & Tobin, Inc. The deal covers boys’ apparel as well as boys’ and girls’ school uniforms under the Perry Ellis, Perry Ellis Portfolio and Perry Ellis America brands. The new product will be available at retail in the U.S. and Canada beginning this fall. “This is a great opportunity to extend the Perry Ellis brand to another complementary category,” said Oscar Feldenkreis, president and chief operating officer of Miami-based PEI. Founded in 1914, family-owned Fishman & Tobin also holds kids’ licenses for Calvin Klein, Nautica, Sean John, Izod, Van Heusen, Dockers and Arrow.



• SAM’S CLUB CUTS: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Sunday that it is cutting more than 10,000 jobs at Sam’s Club, its warehouse division, as it outsources its product sampling department to Shopper Events, a marketing company, and eliminates another unit. “Our demos can be a competitive advantage and we want to take this member experience to the next level,” said Sam’s Club chief executive officer Brian Cornell in a memo posted to the company’s Web site. The retailer also cut its new business membership representative positions, impacting about two staffers per store. Cornell said Shopper Events expects to hire roughly the same number of people as those laid off and the Sam’s Club employees will have the opportunity to apply for the new positions. In early January, Wal-Mart shuttered 10 Sam’s Club stores, which resulted in about 1,500 job cuts.
